Campus Sustainability Starts With Knowing: Measuring the Carbon Footprint in Higher Education

Colleges and universities are places where some of the most important conversations about the environment happen. Students learn about climate change in classrooms. Researchers publish studies on clean energy and biodiversity. Campus clubs organise tree-plantation drives and awareness campaigns — all part of growing campus sustainability efforts across India. And yet, most campuses in India have no idea what their own carbon footprint in higher education actually looks like. Very few institutions bring together energy use, waste, transport, and construction data into a single, integrated measurement system. The irony is clear: the very places that teach sustainability often lack the tools to measure their own impact.
